Down to Earth Cafe sits comfortably in Portland’s SW 35th neighborhood as a cozy breakfast spot and coffee shop where locals come to settle into thoughtfully prepared morning and midday meals. This tiny, unpretentious café channels a casual vibe that’s ideal for a weekday brunch or a laid-back weekend breakfast, though expect a more bustling scene when Saturdays and Sundays roll around.

The menu offers a surprisingly broad range for the cafe’s size, serving both classic and creative dishes that draw regulars back. Items like the Breakfast Burrito, Monte Cristo, and Vegetarian Eggs Benedict share space with lighter options like the Chicken Pear Salad or the Mediterranean Plate, catering well to varied appetites and dietary preferences. Coffee-wise, the quality holds its own—lattes and hot chocolates come highly regarded, offering a steady draw for those who value a well-made cup alongside their food.

The atmosphere is easygoing with a no-frills interior that welcomes conversation and casual dining without fuss. Weekday afternoons tend to be the calmest times to visit, making it a solid choice for a relaxed breakfast or a quick lunch where the service is attentive enough to feel personal but never rushed. During weekends, the cafe fills with a mix of locals and weekenders, so be prepared for a livelier pulse and some wait time.

Down to Earth functions well as a reliable neighborhood hub for anyone looking to start their day with a hearty meal, a solid coffee, and a warm, simple atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping by solo for a vanilla latte and French toast or gathering friends for a brunch featuring items like the Huevos Rancheros or the California Breakfast Panini, this café feels like a straightforward, comfortable place to recharge before heading back out into the city.

We’re regulars at Down to Earth, we usually go for brunch once a week. It’s almost always a weekday around 1pm and we’ve had no issues with service or food quality. If you visit on the weekend it’s like anywhere else, gets very busy so you’ll wait longer. Yesterday we ordered two items from the specials board; the Huevos Rangeros and Yuppie Skillet - both delicious!

Tiny little spot, but they made a really good breakfast. And they are so nice and attentive. Their service was honestly top notch. Their lattes were very good. We're not big breakfast eaters, so the portions were almost too much. I couldn't finish mine. It was tasty though.

Based on nothing more than the general appearance of this storefront breakfast Cafe, I was expecting the food to just be just solid. Man was I wrong! My breakfast burrito was absolutely awesome. I exchanged he chicken for bacon on the California chicken breakfast burrito and it totally hit the spot. My wife got an omlett and really enjoyed hers as well. The service was ok, as was the atmosphere. I'm definitely coming back for the food though.

For a small cafe, they have an extensive menu. They serve breakfast and lunch and weekends are particularly busy. Between the three of us we had the avocado Benedict and omelettes. All good

Came in for breakfast and ordered the French toast with fresh berries, bananas and candied walnuts. Also turkey bacon and a side of potatoes. Everything was delicious! Would stop by again soon

A cute little gem in the village. We went for lunch and had some sandwiches with chips. It is a lovely little place with tons of character and good peeps. A little costly but most quality places have to keep up with cost so I understand it. I'll be back for breakfast someday soon!
